Choosing the right outboard oil
The first question is whether your engine is a 2 stroke or a 4 stroke. The two need completely different oils, and using the wrong one can damage the engine.
2 stroke outboards
2 stroke engines burn oil with the fuel, either premixed or through an oil injection system. Choose an oil rated NMMA TC-W3 for water cooled outboards and follow the mixing ratio in your manual. Browse 2 stroke outboard oil.
4 stroke outboards
4 stroke engines use oil in the sump like a car engine. Most specify SAE 10W-40 marine oil. Check the grade and capacity in your manual before ordering. Browse 4 stroke outboard oil.
Questions we get asked
Can I use car oil in my outboard?
It is not recommended. Marine oils are formulated for the constant high load and corrosive, wet conditions outboards run in.
How much oil does my 4 stroke outboard need?
Capacity varies by engine. Your owner manual lists it, and we stock 1, 4, 5 and 20 litre sizes.
What does TC-W3 mean?
It is the NMMA standard for 2 stroke oils used in water cooled outboard engines.
